Abstract: The recoil spectrum of the primary knock-ons was calculated for reactor irradiations of Al, Fe, Cu, Ag and Au. The neutron flux density and energy distribution is that of the low temperature irradiation facility at the FRM. The contribution of elastic and inelastic scattering processes of fast neutrons was calculated separately. The anisotropy of elastic scattering was taken in account. Using these recoil spectra the expected production rate of Frenkel defects was calculated assuming the displacement model of KINCHIN and PEASE. These calculated production rates agree with the values deduced from electrical resistivity measurements only, if one uses a mean displacement energy of 50 e V for aluminium, of 160 e V copper, of 190 e V for silver and of 130 e V for gold. A similar comparison of theory and experiment for deuteron irradiation.gives quite different displacement energies, using the same displacement model. Therefore it can be derived that the Kinchin-Pease-model cannot account for the right dependence of the number of stable Frenkel pairs on the energy of the primary knock-ons. Possible explanations of the deviations are discussed.
